‘Abdullah ibn Yusuf told us: We were informed by Malik, from Hisham ibn ‘Urva, from his father, from ‘Aisha, the mother of the faithful, may Allah be pleased with her, that al-Haris ibn Hisham, may he be pleased with him.

Text of the hadith

2 We were told by ‘Abdullah ibn Yusuf, who said: We were informed by Malik, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘Aisha, the mother of the faithful, may Allah be pleased with her, that Al-Haris ibn Hisham, may Allah be pleased with him, asked the Messenger of Allah, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how do the revelations come to you?’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Sometimes what comes to me is like the ringing of a bell, which is most difficult for me, and this leaves me when I have already learned what he has said.” Sometimes the angel appears to me as a man and speaks to me with his words, and I absorb what he says. ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw revelations sent down to him on very cold days, and after the revelation was completed, sweat poured from his forehead.
